Wing Whistle

Description:

This is a sound most often heard from the Mourning Doves in the yard. The sound is made by a flying dove.  The faster and harder the flight, the more pronounced the sound.

A series of fast repeating, high pitched whistles....like a rapidly repeating tea kettle.

Physical Description:

When a dove flies, the wing flapping motion presses against the air chamber and causes small amounts of air to be pushed out of the air sac through the narrow nasal passage (naries) which causes a whistling sound while the dove is flying. Not a good feature when stealth is needed as a defense.
